I was playing Luigi against a Ness, I got hit off of the edge and used a side-B to recover (wasn't a misfire), I hit Ness, but instead of falling to the floor, I hit him and carried on going like usual. Does anyone know why??

Did ness get the knockback from your attack? If not, I have the same thing oftenly with falco.
I use his ada, ana and even fsmash and sometimes I hit and it doesn't make my opponent (and me) have any knockback. i thought they were called phantom hits ... but I'm not sure though ^^.

Yeah, Ness got knockback, but Luigi's attack carried on like I didn't hit anything..

This happens with many attacks, not just luigi. Marios intercept, and tons of other attacks.

Mario's fair would carry on anyway, whereas Luigi's side-b stops when he hits something, but in this case it didn't.

Then why did the Ness get knockback from the attack?

If it was a phantom hit he wouldn't have got knocked back, but I think he would still glow orange.

He got knockback and the attack continued. It's kinda like the opposite of a phantom hit.
